The African Mantis - Sphodromantis Species

This Caresheet is a general care guide for all African mantis with from the Sphodromantis family. The individuals photographed are a mix of species I have kept. Sphodromantis Viridis and Sphodromantis Sp Chad.

Country of Origin: Africa mainly but can be found in some southern European countries like Spain and Cyprus depending on the genus. Israel too.

Food: Will eat anything it can overpower. Crickets, locusts, cockroaches, flies such as curly wings, fruit flies, blue bottles, green bottles, wax worms, wax moths.

Temperature: 20﮿C-30﮿C

Humidity: 50% Light mist once a day or every other day if kept at lower temperatures to allow drinking and assist with moulting. These guys do not like it too humid.

Adult Size: Can depend on the locale. Some are giants like the Chad locale at 9cm long and others like the Togo locale which max out at 6.5cm

Sphodromantis...the PERRFFFECT begginer species. They are super tolerant of a range of temperatures, will smash anything and just your classic take no prisoners pet mantis. Love em. Love em. Love em.

Sphodromantis come in a range of colours from the classic green, to turquoise, to pale grey to almost white, to mottled grey to brown depending on genetics and locale.

Sphodromantis are usually a long lived mantis with lifespans of a year long for males and a few months longer for females.
